Aftercare
1-3 Weeks
Continue washing: Gently wash the tattoo once or twice a day and re-apply moisturizer as needed to keep it hydrated. Avoid soaking: Do not submerge the tattoo in water. This includes baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, and soaking in lakes or oceans. Short showers are fine. Stay out of the sun: Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight, as UV rays can cause irritation and fading. Do not pick: Do not pick, scratch, or peel the scabs or dry skin, as this can cause permanent damage and pull out ink. Wear loose clothing: Continue to wear loose clothing to avoid friction and irritation.
First 1-3 Days
Wash hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo. Remove bandage: Take off the bandage after a few hours to a full day, as recommended by your artist. Gentle washing: Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, antibacterial, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry: Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub. Apply ointment: Apply a very thin layer of a tattoo aftercare ointment or a fragrance-free moisturizer as directed by your artist. Avoid using petroleum-based products unless specifically recommended. Stay clean: Keep the area clean, wear loose clothing, and avoid tight clothing or anything that rubs against the tattoo.
Longterm
Use sunscreen: Once fully healed, always protect your tattoo from the sun with a minimum SPF 50 to prevent fading. Stay hydrated: Keep skin hydrated both from the inside (drinking water) and the outside with moisturizer to help the tattoo look its best long-term.
